Phraataces (c. 2 B.C. - A.D. 4)

ΦΡΑΑΤΑΚΗΣ

Phraataces was the son of Phraates IV and a slave given to the Parthian king by the Romans in 20 B.C. Augustus made a deal to obtain return the Roman legionary standards captured by the Parthians from Crassus at Carrhae in 53 B.C., Saxa in 40 B.C. and Marc Anthony in 36 B.C. Included in the exchange was the gift of the slave girl name at Carrhae in 53 B.C., Saxa in 40 B.C. and Marc Anthony in 36 B.C. Included in the exchange was the gift of the slave girl named Musa. In time, Musa was elevated as Phraates' queen. In 10 B.C., she persuaded Phraates IV to send his other sons to Rome for their safety. Cleared of any rivals to her son, she poisoned her husband in 2 B.C. in order for her son Phraataces to succeed his father on the throne. Phraataces married his mother Musa in A.D. 2 and began issuing coinage containing both of their portraits. Such a union was not unprecedented in certain eastern cultures but, at least for propaganda purposes, evidently horrified the Roman sensibilities. Orodes III overthrew them both and Phraataces fled to Syria in A.D. 4.

Coins with both Phraataces and Queen Musa's images are presented below. You can visit the Queen Musa biography page.

Coins Attributed to Phraataces

The attributions and cataloging of Parthian coins used throughout this web site follow David Sellwood's An Introduction to the Coinage of Parthia (1980, 2nd edition) for consistency. The few exceptions to this policy are explained here.
