Abstract: A study of Hellenistic coin portraits indicates the presence of diseases which can be identified. Coins of Orodes I, Phraates IV, Mithradates II, Vologeses II and IV, Seleucus I, Myrina, Philetaerus of Pergamum, Syracuse, Cleopatra and Ptolemy are described.

Also seen as a paper presented at the 70th General Meeting of the Archaeological Institute of America, Toronto, Dec 28-30, 1968 in American Journal of Archaeology, vol. 73, no. 2 (Apr 1969), p. 236.

Abstract: Certain Hellenistic coins provide evidence about disease not only of individual kings, but of whole populations as well. The portrait tetradrachms of the Arsacids show the persistence of trichoepithelioma, Brook's tumor, over six generations.... [W. G. Burleigh]

Abstract: The depiction of trichoepithelioma, Brook's tumor, on the portrait coins of Artabanus IV and Mithradates IV gives additional support for the presence of a hereditary benign tumor in the Arsacid house. [W. G. Burleigh]

Haruta, Seiro
"Sar-e Pol-e Zohâb Inscriptions: King Gotarz Son of King Artabân and Spâdak of the Great Kârin Family" [in Japanese] (1990)
Bulletin of the Society for Western and Southern Asiatic Studies [Seinan-Asia Kenkyu], 1990, no. 33 (Sep 1990), p. 55-68.
Abstract: Prof. Haruta's reading, based not on the relief itself but only on the photograph in the Iranische Denkmaeler, is as follows:
-- Inscription A (Left):
1) ptkr ZNH (reading certain)
2) NP$H gwtrz (reading certain)
3) ML(K') (reading probable)
4) (BRY) (reading possible)
5) (')rtbnw (reading possible; Gropp's reading 'BRY gyw' is impossible)
6) MLK' (reading uncertain)
-- Inscription B (Right)
1) p(tk)r ZNH (reading certain)
2) N(P$)H (reading certian)
3) sp(d)k (reading possible)
4) kryn (reading possible)
5) wzrk (reading possible)
-- Gropp thinks that there is a line below Line 6; that is, his line 7 of Inscription A, while Prof. Haruta does not.
-- Gropp and Brunner (apud Kawami in Acta Iranica 26) regards the vertical lines in the left end of lines 2-5 of Inscription B as parts of letters; Prof. Haruta regards these lines as the edge(s) of the face and of the diadem.
-- Prof. Haruta finds Inscription A seems to belong to Gotarz II, rather than Gotarz I, but this is not decisive.
-- 'Kryn' in the Inscription B may be the name of a noble family, or may be the geographical name, 'Karina' in Stathmoi Parthikoi, but the reading of the Inscription B is not certain at all.

"A Primary Source for the History of the Arshakid Parthia : Astronomical Diaries from 164 B.C. to 61 B.C." [in Japanese] (1998)
Oriento (Bulletin of the Society for Near Eastern Studies in Japan), 1998, vol. 41-2, p. 181-193.
Abstract: Prof. Haruta shows how useful the Astronomical Diaries are for the study of Arsacid Parthia. He argues:
-- For the royal lines: Mihrdat II died in 91 B.C. (No.-90 Obv.31), not in 87 B.C.
-- For the political history: The invasion of the Elymaeans into Babylonia in 145 B.C. has been unknown so far.
-- For the estimation of the other sources: 'Vagasis' in Justinus XLI,7 is probably 'Bagayasha' in the Diaries No.-137A Obv.18 etc., though the former is said to be under Mihrdat I. 'Pitthides' in Diodoros XXXIV/XXXV is without doubt the same person in the Diaries (No.-124B Obv.19), though scholars have thought the former under the reign of Frahat II. 'Mithrates' in a Bisotun inscription is apparently the 'MitraTu' in the Diaries (No.-90 Obv.15 etc.).
-- High officials with Greek names: note also the difference between the period of Mihrdat I / Frahat II and that of Mihrdat II.
-- Highly developed propaganda by reading royal letters in 'bi:t ta:marti' in Babylon.
-- Re-examination of the Awroman parchment No.1: if the date were written in the Macedonian method, as scholars have thought, the parchment would be written under the reign of Gotarz I (Mihrdat II died some years earlier); the names of queen of Gotarz I in Diaries does not accord those in the Awroman parchment No.1 at all. It is better to assume, therefore, that the date is written in the Babylonian method, that is, November 87 B.C., after the new king (Urod?) sat on the throne (No.-86A Rev.4). Also important is that the king of the Awroman parchment No.1 has the title 'king of kings' though no coins have the legend 'king of kings' through the Dark Age after Mihrdat II had died.
-- For the history of the 'Arabs': constant raids by 'Arbaya' are reported in Diaries from 130 B.C. to 106 B.C.
-- For the history of Babylon: reading royal letters in 'bit tamarti' may offer the chance to interact the people of the Esagila temple-institution and Greek-Macedonian population; that may lead to the fade out of the latter into the neighbouring people then speaking Aramaic.
-- In a note, Prof. Haratu briefly refutes Geller's fanciful article "The Last Wedge" (ZA 87) by pointing out that the palaeography of Greek scripts shown in the Awroman Nos.1 & 2 does not contradict the early dating (1st century B.C.) of the 'Graeco-Babylonica tablets'

Abstract: The article discusses the calendar used in the minting of Arsacid coins. The commonly held view of the use of the Makedonian calender is challenged. If we use the Babylonian calendar instead this causes several important changes for Arsacid history.
