Gutschmid, Alfred von
Geschichte Irans und seiner Nachbarländer : von Alexander dem Grossen bis zum Untergang der Arsaciden (1888)
Graz: Akademische Drucke- u. Verlagsanstalt, 1973
Abstract: Gutschmid's article "Persia" in the Encyclopaedia Britannica, 9th ed., is an abridged translation of this work.

"Gutschmid's treatise is highly-condensed, but none the less a most informing work. It abounds in brilliant--if often over-bold--hypotheses and combinations, and great use is made of the numismatic material used by Gardner. It is regrettable. however, that Gutschmid knew the coins only from books. Thus on one hand, he is wont to treat some attributions as far more certain than even numismatists would claim them to be, while on the other, he sometimes rejects well-established attributions on what, to a numismatist, will seem arbitrary grounds without sufficiently considering that one change (in a regal sense) involves another, and often many others." -- Wroth [BMC Parthia, xiv]
